Chapter 33

Friday, February 19

Java awoke before sunup. She was anxious to learn Penny’s findings. She contemplated making coffee and texting Penny to see if the medical examiner was awake. She eased out of bed careful not to disturb Kat and stumbled to the kitchen. She was reaching for the coffee maker when she remembered her vow to give up coffee for Lent. What was I thinking? she thought placing the carafe back in its holder.

She texted Penny and was amazed at the instant response. “Lazarus Whitfield is your man. He matches the DNA we scraped from under Mrs. Gutierrez’s fingernails. Now we have to get a voluntary DNA sample from him. You know your strawberry stunt isn’t admissible in court?”

“Easier said than done,” Java texted back. “Thanks loads, Penny.”

The air shifted in the room and Java knew her wife had entered. She hid a smile as she waited for Kat to slip her arms over her shoulders and press her soft breasts against her back. The anticipation was almost as delicious as the electricity that shot through her when Kat made contact.

“Dear God, I love you,” Java said as she swiveled the stool around to face Kat.

Kat pushed between Java’s knees and brushed her lips with her own. “What are you doing out of my bed?”

“I was about to return,” Java nibbled Kat’s bottom lip. “I had to know what Penny found out.”

“I was hoping that was what you were doing. Is Whitfield our perp?”

“It looks that way,” Java tightened her legs around Kat. “We must get his DNA legally.”

“You have any ideas how we’ll do that?”

“I’m thinking a hit with a taser. That usually causes a release of body fluids.”

Kat laughed. “What excuse would you use for doing that?”

“Bad idea?”

“I think you are in a bad mood and just want to hurt him. Why don’t we have Abuela tell Beau she is certain Whitfield is the man who attacked her and have her select him from a line up?”

“And all we get him for is attempted burglary and assault.” Java grumped.

“We could put a surveillance team on him.”

“We need to form another SKIRT team.” Java frowned. “What do you think about Chris heading up our second team and Gloria can help her until we add more people?”

“Let’s discuss it with Chris. I’m not certain she is up to it yet.”

Kat’s phone dinged and she pulled it from her purse to read the text message.

Java raised an eyebrow. “Avery reminding me to pick her up from the airport tomorrow,” Kat informed her as she placed her phone on the desk. “I would really appreciate it if you’d go with me.”

“I’m always happy to be with you.” Java smiled as her own phone rang.

“Karen, yes. We are working on setting up the team right now. We want Chris to head it up. Kat was just going to get Chris so we can discuss it. I’ll report back to you as soon as we finish discussing it.” She nodded to Kat and the brunette left the office.
